HE NEXT MORNING, MIA WOKE TO A GENTLE SHAKE. She tried to grab Romanos for a morning kiss as she usually did, but he evaded her. Blearily, her eyes opened, ignoring the blinding sun that broke through the open blinds of her window, before she blinked. Romanos was fully dressed in a suit.
âWhere are you going?â She sat up on her bed, ignoring her sleepy mind as fear formed in the pit of her belly. Was he leaving her already? They still had a few days left.
âGet dressed,â he said before he walked over to her dresser. For a moment, Mia could do nothing but stare as she watched Romanos pull some of her things out of her dresser before dropping them inside of her suitcase. Mia was confused and had no idea what was going on. But the tight expression on Romanos's face and the clenching of his jaw told her not to question it even if she wanted to. So, she listened instead. She climbed out of her bed and padded over to her bathroom, taking a quick shower before she got dressed.
There was no breakfast. There was no talking. There was nothing but silence as he packed some of her things, and Mia turned off the part of her mind that wanted to question what was happening. She trusted Romanos. She did. But trust didn't mean ignorance either.
But for now, she clamped her mouth shut and put her shoes on. Once she did, she was whisked out of the door, barely getting the chance to properly lock her apartment door.
The keys to her apartment jingled in her hand as they walked down the steps of her building before stepping outside. What they saw outside of her apartment made her alarmed. Three black cars were parked on the street, and shady looking men dressed in suits stood outside of them. People walking by glanced at the men and the expensive cars with curiosity. Mia found herself stumped, especially when the men looked in their direction, specifically at Romanos, and then lowered their heads respectfully. It wasn't a deep bow for a king, but nonetheless, it was a bow that was given to someone powerful. They looked at Romanos as if he were powerful. Mia's brow rose as she looked at Romanos, but he didn't respond and instead walked them down the remaining steps before handing her suitcases to one of the men. She watched as that man took her suitcases in hand before placing them inside the trunk of the last car.
Hand on her lower back, Romanos guided her to the car in the middle. Mia barely got settled in the back before the car sped off. The windows were tinted, and the partition was up, closing them off from the driver and the man in the passenger seat. Mia tried to remain calm, but as they got further and further away from her home, she could not help the panic she felt.
